Catch and Release
We’ve hit the halfway mark.
It’s June.
What do we do now?
Well, whatever it is we wanted this year to be about, is what we focus on.
That’s what we do.
Because things will happen ready or not. You might as well go for it.
Whatever IT is for you.
We took the kids to a fishing derby last weekend. I’ve wanted to do this since my oldest was young; he’s already twenty three. My middle son has been asking for years. And yet, we drug our feet, put it off, found every reason to not just do it.
No shame here. Life is wild and we have done so many other things.
This year though, on a morning I knew we already had to travel for a baseball game and the weather was not so perfect, I decided THIS IS IT.
THIS is the year we go for it. Do we have poles? I think so…?
Do we have bait?
No…
Annnnnnd here we go. We’re gonna figure this out as we go. We just need to get there.
So we did. We went. Found a friend with bait and moved through it minute by minute.
Before we were ready, or even had our heads in the game, one of our boys caught a fish.
Reeling it in, he looked at me with a blank face.
Then I looked to my husband with some sort of other kind of face, stating a bit too loudly, “Well NOW do we do?!?!”
Ha! We had no solid plan. But here we were, committed to a vision with a wing it kind of mentality.
My son said with no hesitation- “I want to let him go.”
This was an incredible moment to witness- in the moment, he KNEW what he wanted and needed to do without any doubt or care that all around him, this was not the general go-to thing to do.
Catch and release. What a beautiful refelction of life. We can’t hold on. We have to let go. And here is where inner peace is born.
Checking in with our youngest, who did NOT catch a fish, but DID cast ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE POND- I captured his words in my heart forever-
“It’s ok mom. I’m still learning.”
As long as you know what it is you really want and just go for it, you can figure it out. Most importantly, when you find yourself saying “Now what the heck do I do….?”, know that deep down-
You know what to do.
And waiting to have all those ducks in a row is not a thing. Ready or not, do the thing.
It may feel scary, new, exciting, or terrifying.
But you know what you need. You know what you want. Find a friend who can be there and offer worms in the moments where you are committed, want to commit, and just need a little nudge to trust yourself.
Don’t forget- we are all still learning- always learning…. and always changing with what comes in and out of our lives.
Welcome to JUNE.
Ps- There were turtles. In the fishing pond. If you know me, you’ll not be surprised I was squealing with excitement, almost losing the fishing pole I was holding, as this was probably more exciting than Christmas morning for me;)
